A WMS Gaming Super Jackpot Party slot machine: a real casino cabinet, not a toy. When I got it, it wouldn't make it into the game. It stopped partway through startup on a screen full of boot messages.

Debugging

Under the hood it runs Linux off CompactFlash cards on the main board, so the boot screen is the place to start. I read through what it was checking and where it gave up, one error at a time.

CompactFlash and a memory clear

The breakthrough was getting the CompactFlash cards right so I could clear out the machine's memory and start fresh.

Reconfiguring

With the memory clear, the machine needed its setup done again from scratch before it would run the game.

The key I didn't have

The last problem: the machine wants a key turned in its key switch, and I didn't have the key. So I swapped the key lock for a push button wired to the same contacts.

The first photos of it stuck are from October 2025. On June 10, 2026 it finally booted all the way up and played.
